What Is Botox?

Botox is a drug that weakens or paralyzes muscle. In small doses, it can reduce skin wrinkles and help treat some medical conditions. Botox is a protein made from Botulinum toxin, which is the same toxin that causes botulism. These substances target the nervous system, disrupting the nerve signaling processes that stimulate muscle contraction. This is how the drug causes temporary muscle paralysis.

In order for any muscle to contract, the nerves release a chemical messenger called acetylcholine at the junction where nerve endings meet muscle cells. Acetylcholine attaches to receptors on the muscle cells and causes the cells to contract or shorten. Botox injections prevent the release of acetylcholine, which stops the muscle cells from contracting. In this way, the toxin helps the muscles to become less stiff.

What Is Xeomin?

Xeomin contains botulinum toxin type A, which blocks muscle movement in the area around the injection site. Because it prevents those facial muscles from fully contracting, the treatment makes fine lines and wrinkles less noticeable. Most patients who have had an injection enjoy a smoother, more youthful-looking face for three to four months. This botulinum treatment is particularly effective on frown lines between the eyebrows, but it is also used to treat:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Fine lines above the lip
  • Furrowed brows
  • Other cosmetic concerns

Although it hasn’t been around as long as Botox, the two treatments function in much the same way. One difference between the two is their chemical formulation. Xeomin is considered a “naked” neurotoxin, which means it is comprised of just a single ingredient: botulinum toxin A.

Botox, on the other hand, is made up of botulinum toxin and several other additives and proteins. Because it is made up of a single ingredient, Xeomin is less likely to provoke an allergic reaction, and patients are less likely to build up resistance to the treatment over time.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers work by boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers revitalize and add volume to the skin, instantly diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles and giving a natural, softer look. Dermal fillers are a soft injectable gel consisting of stabilized, non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. It is long-lasting but not permanent.

Dermal filler injections provide an easy way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, smooth the skin and give a more youthful appearance. The result of a single treatment can be seen instantly and can last for around six to nine months.

Whether you choose Botox, Xeomin, or dermal fillers, A Better You has cutting-edge solutions for your cosmetic needs.
